Dentist Dr. Seb Lomas is one of the few experts in the country who specializes in treating patients with respiratory problems such as snoring.

Seb shared a video showing a simple trick he says will help reduce snoring. Seb said:

“Hold your tongue to the top of your mouth and then click with it. Do 30 such clicks a day. The louder the click, the better the tongue position. All this is aimed at strengthening the muscles of the respiratory tract.

Snoring is caused by irregular airway muscles, poor tongue position, and mouth breathing during sleep. Mouth and throat exercises can strengthen the muscles of the airway and tongue while promoting nasal breathing, writes manchestereveningnews.co.uk.

Mouth breathing is one of the most common causes of snoring, so it is important to understand proper breathing.

Find out why you snore and how to treat it

Take the simple tests below to find out what type of snoring you have and find out which treatments are approved by the UK’s leading body, the British Snoring and Sleep Apnea Association, writes britishsnoring.co.uk.

Nose test

While looking in the mirror, press the side of one nostril to close it. With your mouth closed, inhale through the other nostril. If the nostril tends to constrict, try to open it with a clean end of a match. If breathing is easier by opening the nostrils, nasal dilators can solve the problem of snoring. Try both nostrils.

Now with your mouth closed, try to inhale through your nose. If you can’t breathe well through your nose, you may be suffering from nasal congestion caused by allergies.

You can consider the following causes: feather pillows and bedding, pet hair, house dust mites, allergic rhinitis, seasonal allergies, perfumes and body sprays, household cleaning products such as bleach.

Tongue test

Extend your tongue as far as possible and grasp it between your teeth. Now try the snoring sound. If the sound of snoring is reduced with the tongue in this forward position, you are probably a so-called “tongue base snorer”. The most appropriate control device for this type of snoring is a mandibular displacement device.

Palate tremor

If none of these tests help, you may have a vibrating soft palate. Palate flutter is the vibration of the soft palate and palate. This is a common cause in normal weight patients.

Mouth breathing test

Open your mouth and make a snoring sound. Now close your mouth and try to make the same sound. If you can only snore with your mouth open, you are a mouth breather.

Multifactorial snoring

You may fall into more than one of these snoring categories. In this case, the snoring probably originates from several areas. For example, you can snore with both palatal flutter and base-of-tongue snoring.

Body mass index (BMI test)

If you think you’re overweight, find out by checking your body mass index (BMI). You can do this by dividing your weight (kg) by your height² (m).

If your BMI is greater than 25, you are overweight. If your BMI is greater than 30, you are obese. In both cases, you need to lose weight not only to stop snoring, but also to prevent other obesity-related diseases.
