As the State Border Guard Service (VSAT) informs, on Wednesday morning, a Toyota car with Lithuanian license plates stopped near the patrolling border guards on the Marijampolė-Suvalkai road. The 59-year-old Lithuanian who was driving it informed VSAT officials about the two suspicious passengers being transported.

Kalvarija border guards managed to find out that it is a 27-year-old Ukrainian citizen and a 34-year-old man from Sri Lanka. The latter presented the Latvian Aliens Registration Center certificate to the VSAT officials.

It turned out that he had applied for asylum in Latvia, so he had no right to leave there while his application was being processed. After clarifying the circumstances of the incident, the detained migrant will be handed over to the border guards of Latvia.

During the investigation, it became clear that the Sri Lankan citizen entered Latvia illegally crossing the border from Belarus. Using the services of a Ukrainian citizen, he planned to reach one of the countries of Western Europe from Latvia through Lithuania and Poland.

A pre-trial investigation has been started in the VSAT Varėna border police station regarding the illegal transportation of people across the state border. Such a criminal offense is punishable by a fine, arrest or imprisonment for up to six years.

On Wednesday, the Ukrainian citizen was remanded in custody – bail.
