Poland reintroduces VAT on food products after a period of zero value added tax (VAT) rate.
Inflation has risen in Poland and elsewhere around the world since the coronavirus pandemic, due to supply chain disruptions as lockdowns ended and customers rushed to buy goods and services. The situation was further worsened by the Russian invasion of Ukraine that began in February 2022.
In response to high inflation, which at one time reached 18.4 percent. per year, the Polish government from February 2022 from 5 to 0 percent. reduced VAT on basic food products.
However, in February 2024, when inflation decreased to 2.8 percent. per year, the reason to maintain the zero rate has disappeared.
Returned 5 percent. the tariff will apply to staple foods such as meat, fish, bread, milk and milk products, eggs, fruit and vegetables.
According to the data of the Polish National (Central) Bank, annual inflation may increase by 0.9 percentage points due to the reinstatement of VAT on food products.
