Poland is hoping its politicians can help turn Donald Trump on Russia and convince him to continue supporting Ukraine, Politico reported.

Trump has long urged NATO countries to increase defense spending, and he told international allies in February that he would let Russia do “whatever it wants” with member states that do not meet defense spending criteria.

Polish President Andrzej Duda met with the former president in New York on April 17, where the two “discussed the war between Russia and Ukraine, the conflict with Israel in the Middle East and many other topics related to the pursuit of world peace.” Trump’s campaign said in a statement.

A day after the meeting, D. Trump, who repeatedly praised Russian President Vladimir Putin and often criticized aid to Ukraine, wrote on social networks: “As everyone agrees, the survival and strength of Ukraine should be much more important to Europe than to us, but it is also important to us!” Move Europe!’

A. Duda also met with the chairman of the Republican House of Representatives, Mike Johnson. Some politicians acknowledged that the meeting contributed to the long-delayed vote on US military aid to Ukraine.

“A. Duda is our Republican whisperer,” Michal Baranowski, head of the German Marshall Fund’s Poland office, told Politico.

“Big applause for President Andrzej Duda, who has acquired powerful resources to fight against Russian imperialism,” said Dariusz Mateckis, a lawmaker from the Sovereign Poland party, which unites the Law and Justice party.

But others were less inclined to believe that Polish officials had such an influence on US policy. EU lawmaker Andrzej Halicki told Politico that the idea was “nonsense”.

Ahead of the US presidential election later this year and Trump’s possible victory, his stance on Russia and Ukraine is raising concerns in European capitals, particularly Kyiv.

Trump has repeatedly said he could end Russia’s war within 24 hours if elected president, but has not outlined steps to reach a peace deal between Kyiv and Moscow.

The former president “made it very clear” that he believed Ukraine “should be part of Russia,” his former adviser Fiona Hill said, according to The Guardian, citing an excerpt from a book by The New York Times journalist David Sanger.
