On May 8, the National Museum of Lithuania signed a preliminary contract for the final renovation of the southeastern part of Mount Gediminas with UAB “Rekreacinė statyba”, the winner of the open public tender announced at the beginning of the year.

The value of the contract is 13,422,530.00 euros. The contract works will start after the National Museum of Lithuania receives the funding necessary for the execution of these works and after signing the final contract with the contractor. The financing issue is currently being resolved with the Ministry of Culture.

Long-term management works will take place in the south-eastern part of the mountain, which is in the most difficult condition – the south-eastern slope and the remains of the Upper Castle Palace have signs of danger.

The purpose of the planned works is to stabilize the slope, arrange the rainwater drainage system, install a grass cover and slope irrigation system, and strengthen the masonry and foundations of the remains of the Upper Castle Palace. Part of the main path to Gediminas Hill, which has been closed to visitors since 2017, will be repaired, and artifacts from the castle period found on the slope during archaeological research will be strengthened and highlighted.

After the implementation of the planned works, the southeastern slope (covering an area of about 5,000 square meters), the foundations of a part of the southeastern defensive wall (a section 80 meters long) and the remains of the Upper Castle palace (covering an area of about 670 square meters) would be strengthened.

According to the contract, it is expected that the management works will last 36 months from the signing of the final contract.

After the completion of these works, Gediminas kalnos would be waiting for the second phase of long-term maintenance works, which would cover the remaining unmaintained slopes. Their approximate area is 29 thousand. square meters.

Mount Gediminas is stable

Gediminas mountain is currently in a stable condition, but it remains dependent on weather conditions. During the rainy season or during summer rains, the condition of the mountain may deteriorate due to the amount of water, but the 24-hour monitoring system installed on the mountain allows you to notice any changes in advance. Sensors installed on all slopes of the mountain record ground changes with millimeter accuracy.

The museum has concluded a long-term contract for emergency works, which allows us to respond immediately to any changes taking place on Mount Gediminas.

The long-term stability of the entire mountain will be ensured only after the implementation of the contract works according to the final settlement project.
