G. Nausda – stopping Sakartvelo’s status as a candidate for the EU

Candidate status is only one step in the path of European integration. I don’t think that I should now initiate the return of the Sakartvelo block, because it will probably also greatly disappoint the civil society, which is currently taking to the streets and needs its own protests, the head of the city told journalists on Tuesday in Vilnius.

In Skartvele, there have been recent protests directed at the construction project of a superstitious foreign agent.

If the bill is passed, all independent non-governmental and media organizations that receive more than a fifth of their license abroad will have to register as an organization acting in the interests of a foreign state.

The opposition speculates that the bet could harm the country’s bid to become a member of the European Union. Critics call the construction project a Russian construction, a reference to Russian foreign agent construction, which the Kremlin uses to silence its critics.

The president of Sakartveli, Salom Zurabivili, who distanced himself from the politics of the ruling party, offered to veto the bill if it was officially adopted in three readings.

At that time, several members of the European Parliament will appeal to the European Union’s chief representative for foreign affairs, Josep Borrell, urging them to react more quickly to the situation in Sakartvel and to consider suspending the EU status of the current EU candidate if the current government does not change.

Sakartveli was granted EU candidate status at the end of last year.
