Dainius Simonavičius, the prosecutor of the Second Criminal Prosecution Department of the Kaunas District Prosecutor’s Office, drew up the indictment and handed over the criminal case to the court, in which, after almost three years of investigation and trial in Hungary, EM, a resident of the city of Alytus, is accused of illegal possession of excise goods.

According to the criminal case, in 2021 in August, EM transported “Minsk Super Slim” cigarettes marked with Belarus stamps on the territory of Lithuania.

The person arrested at the scene of the crime, without documents confirming the purchase, transportation, payment of import duties, excise taxes and value added tax, together with other accomplices, allegedly tried to transport boxes with almost 12.5 thousand packs of cigarettes. The value of the goods reached almost 44 thousand. euros, the prosecutor’s office reported.

The pre-trial investigation was conducted by the investigators of the Pre-trial Investigation Department of the Varėna Border Squad of the State Border Guard Service.

Immediately after committing the crime, the 35-year-old accused was detained, but was released a day later after giving him a written promise not to leave.

The person fled abroad in order to avoid responsibility for the crime he committed, but was detained in Hungary due to the illegal transportation of migrants. By the decision of the Budapest District Court, the man from Alyty was ordered to be arrested and according to the issued European arrest warrant, after almost three years of hiding, he was returned to the Lithuanian law enforcement officers.

For the fact that the accused EM violated the conditions of the pretrial detention measure previously assigned to him and on the suspicion that he may again try to hide from the next 2020. at the request of prosecutor D. Simonavičius, he was assigned the strictest preventive measure – arrest.

The person has previously been convicted seven times for light and serious crimes: robberies, thefts and minor health disorders, and has also been fined several times for administrative law violations.

During the legal process, it will be aimed to award the Lithuanian state the costs of bringing EM to Lithuania – almost 3 thousand. euros.

The criminal case was transferred to the Varėna Chamber of the Alytus District Court.
