May 8th is World War II Remembrance Day. On May 8, 1945, Germany signed the act of capitulation. World War II officially ended on this day. Directly and indirectly, more than 60 countries participated in it, including all the major countries divided into two military blocs. Military operations took place on the territory of 40 states, during which more than 110 million soldiers were mobilized. In the conditions of “total war”, the main rivals concentrated all their economic, industrial and scientific capacities for the purposes of the war, crossing the gap between civilian and military resources. World War II was the deadliest war in human history, killing 50-70 million people. May 8 is the official Victory Day for Europe. Russians celebrate May 9. In recent times, it has also become a propaganda tool for the Russians. Roughly, the world has to thank them for the victory.

Discussant: Vilnius University associate professor Algirdas Jakubčionis and Seimas member, conservative Audronius Ažubalis.
