The Munich prosecutor’s office, which is responsible for investigating politically motivated crimes, took over the case because such a motive “cannot be ruled out,” a spokesman for the prosecutor’s office told AFP news agency.

A 57-year-old Russian suspect was arrested after two Ukrainians were found with stab wounds in a shopping center in the Bavarian town of Murnau on Saturday night.

According to investigators, the circumstances remain unclear.

According to Ukraine’s foreign ministry, both victims, aged 36 and 23, were Ukrainian soldiers who had come to Germany for medical rehabilitation.

The older man died of his injuries at the scene, while the younger man died at the hospital.

The suspect was arrested Saturday at his apartment near the crime scene and remains in custody.

Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba thanked German investigators for the quick arrest of the suspect.

Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Hermann said on Sunday that there was no indication that the crime was “related to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine,” Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper reported.

Witnesses quoted by the publication said that before the incident, the three men were seen together in the city and consumed a lot of alcoholic beverages.
