Shaking walls, collapsing shelves and falling objects – this is how the morning began in Taiwan. The force of the 7.2-magnitude earthquake, the strongest in 25 years, was felt by everyone who was there.

The tremor did not overtake anyone

Residents of Taiwan who took the subway to work also felt the powerful earthquake. Also those who were already working in their workplaces.

The captured video shows the news anchor continuing the live broadcast even though the studio is shaking.

The residents of the small city of Hualien, which is closest to the epicenter of the quake, were the worst hit. Video surveillance cameras captured the moment when a huge high-rise building collapsed.

“All the things fell, everything was damaged,” consoled the resident of Taiwan.

The house is like a toy thrown on its side that looks like it will soon fall to the ground with a thud. Rescue of people trapped inside the operation is not easy, such an unstable position of the house is very dangerous.

“When our team enters the building, it becomes unstable, so before pulling people out, they have to find something to hold onto to ensure their safety,” explained firefighter Su Ching-Hui.

“We need to find out how many people are still trapped in the rubble and rescue them as soon as possible.” The injured must be given proper medical care so that they can recover quickly,” the Taiwanese president taught Lai Ching-Te.

Japan may feel the effects

Meanwhile, in Japan, children are led to the nearest place above. Because right after the earthquake in Taiwan, information spread about a possible tsunami near the Okinawa islands. And if the waves rise above 30 centimeters, the Japanese authorities do not rule out the possibility of a catastrophe.

“Please follow closely any information about the tsunami and stay in a safe area until the bans are lifted,” advised Yoshimasa Hayashi, the chief secretary of the Japanese government.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of almost 16 km. Authorities in Taiwan say nine people have already been killed, about a thousand injured, and 50 are missing in the strongest earthquake in decades. Rescue operations are underway.

Footage from the scene is in the video above.
