In the 75th year of NATO’s existence and the 20th year of Lithuania’s membership in this organization, the geopolitical security situation in our region once again shows the invaluable need for a defensive alliance. At the same time, the realization seems to be getting stronger in Lithuania that not only the allies should take care of our security, but also they themselves must pay attention to it. Therefore, agreeing on higher defense funding includes and alti.
The Seimas has confirmed that 3% of GDP should be allocated to raid protection already next year. This will require an additional 400 million. Eur. Politicians and social partners, employers, trade unions, and non-governmental organizations are already paying attention to his efforts.
It is clear that the final decision on how to collect those few extra million will have to be made by politicians. But it will be extremely difficult to do this in the coming election year. Because we can already see that politicians are not and will hardly be inclined to talk about the fact that taxes may have to be increased due to additional money for raid protection.
They almost unanimously nod their heads when it comes to the need to allocate a lot of money in the coming years to the acquisition of new military equipment, the reception of our partner Germany, the construction of military mobility infrastructure and other urgent needs of the army.
But when we have to decide what taxes we will raise in order to get the desired amount of additional money, we start talking and it cannot be done, and we do not allow it…
And the business is actually talking about itself. The downside is that due to higher defense funding, he is not in favor of, for example, increasing the profit tax, but he also initiated the increase of this funding cartel to the ambitious 4%.
Since to achieve this goal, more than 1 billion will be needed in addition. Eur, it is obvious that we will not avoid a fee increase.
Let’s put our hands to our hearts, as we do every time we sing the anthem of independent Lithuania, and let’s each answer for ourselves whether the security of the country is a matter of honor and duty of every citizen.
If we know and believe that the absolute majority of Lithuanian passport holders will answer positively, then we can delay actions that should not be affected by any populist election calculations.
After all, there is already a debate going on, not because of a place in the Seimas, the Government or the cabinet in Daukantas Square, but because of the freedom and survival of the nation.
Therefore, in V’s opinion, we should come to terms and accept for ourselves that defense and deterrence initiatives must involve all residents, all social groups. Separating one or the other leads to deeper conflict and is not mobilizing.
So, for the defined period (necessary condition defined!) 12 percent. points can be exchanged, value added and profit taxes. Other payment rates change according to need, after assessing the requested amounts.
We should, among other things, get used to the fact that tuition benefits in such a period are immoral and at least some of them should be changed or completely destroyed. This would be an opportunity to change the number of forms of economic activity that allow non-powerful actors to maneuver creatively in changing their obligations to the state.
Aid to the most vulnerable citizens must be precise, as Himars will save the country, and not spread to everyone a little at a time.
Tax increases have limits and definitely make things worse. So maybe the situation will finally force both society and politicians to understand that there is another way to strengthen Lithuania’s economy so that it is competitive in the world. Expecting generous direct foreign investments, which will feed the budget, will make the state naïve and even irresponsible.
Therefore, it is high time to decide in which business sectors we can expect a faster game and concentrate support development there.
If Lithuanian corporate profits are higher, the affairs of the state will be better. All the more so since entrepreneurs seem to have come to terms with the climate of profit tax.
