More than three weeks ago in Brooklyn (USA), the WBC second lightweight world champion, 25-year-old American Devin Haney (31-1, 15 knockouts) suffered the first defeat of his career when he fell three times by knockdowns and by majority decision (112-112, 110-114, 109-115) lost to fellow American Ryan Garcia (25-1, 20 knockouts), although he was deducted a point.
Urine samples were taken before the fight and analysis revealed that Garcia tested positive for the performance-enhancing substance ostarine. The “A” sample also tested positive for the metabolite 19-norandrosterone, which is derived from the prohibited substance nandrolone, but additional laboratory tests were required to confirm this.
As noted boxing journalist Dan Rafael reported, additional tests using isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) confirmed that the result was negative for the metabolite 19-norandrosterone.
Results from sample “B” for ostarine are not yet available. These results are not expected until May 22, but if any amount of ostarine is detected in the “B” sample, it will be considered a positive test as there is no possible low limit.
Garcia himself denies knowingly using any banned substances, and on Wednesday released his opinion on the updated information.
Garcia said that “that low level has no effect” and that he will allow his opponent to take performance-enhancing drugs in his next fight and promised to eat only oranges for a month.
Meanwhile, his rival D. Haney reminded that “the level of the prohibited substance was sufficient to make the test positive and it really had an effect.”
“You dirty bitch,” Haney added.
