The president of the Lithuanian Basketball Federation Vydas Gedvilas presented the official ambassador certificates of the event to Jurgita Štreimikyte-Virbickiene, Gintara Petronyte, Rima Valentiene, Alina Adomaityte and Gintara Grikštaita.
“It is a special day and moment – there has been no such event in Lithuania in more than 100 years of basketball history. For the first time, Lithuania will organize the European Women’s Basketball Championship and for the first time we will have such a large group of ambassadors. I have no doubt that the upcoming championship will be the best in the history of women’s basketball,” said LKF president V. Gedvilas.
According to LKF General Secretary Mindaugas Balčiūnas, while organizing and implementing the 2027 European Women’s Basketball Championship, Lithuania will aim to create the biggest social basketball innovation. The events, which will take place even before the championships and will feature female ambassadors of the European championships, will aim to promote empowerment through sport, social inclusion, gender equality in sport and sports leadership, community building, environmental sustainability and digital innovation.
“Using the 2011 experience, we start organizing the European Women’s Basketball Championship three years before the event. We want to fully utilize the opportunities provided by an event of this scale and the return for Lithuanian basketball. Our goal is that the next three years will completely change the future of Lithuanian women’s basketball, – noted M. Balčiūnas. – We want to show how wide the possibilities of sports and basketball can be.”
We remind you that on November 24 of last year, the board of the FIBA European division gave the right to Lithuania and Finland to jointly organize the 2027 European Women’s Basketball Championship. It is planned that the matches of the two groups of the tournament and the playoffs and fights for medals will be held in Lithuania.
