The politician also voted in the referendum on multiple citizenship. According to V. Blinkevičiūtė, it is extremely important to maintain contact with Lithuanians who live abroad, and thus show that its citizens are important to the state.

“We must not distance ourselves from our people, from the people of Lithuania who live elsewhere due to various circumstances. Lithuania is still shrinking, people have the opportunity to live somewhere else – there are various reasons. Therefore, it is very, very important that this connection with Lithuania is not broken – that we say that we are waiting for them, that we believe in them, that all Lithuanian people are really important to Lithuania and that they must also have Lithuanian citizenship”, said LSDP chairwoman

ELTA reminds that early voting in the presidential elections and the referendum on the preservation of citizenship continues on Wednesday. Voters will be able to vote until Thursday evening from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. in all 60 municipalities, regardless of where they have declared their place of residence.

The main election day is Sunday.

8 candidates are competing for the post of the head of the country – Gitanas Nausėda, who is seeking a second term, Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė nominated by the conservatives, representative of the Freedom Party, former chairman of the Constitutional Court (CT) Dainius Žalimas, independent candidates Ignas Vėgėlė and Eduardas Vaitkus, founder of the “Nemunos aušra” party Remigijus Žemaitaitis , Giedrimas Jeglinskas of the Democratic Union “Vardan Lietuvos” and Chairman of the Labor Party Andrius Mazuronis.

In the referendum ballot, it will be proposed to abandon the sentence currently written in the Constitution: “except for the individual cases provided for by law, no one can be a citizen of the Republic of Lithuania and another state at the same time”. This provision does not allow the preservation of Lithuanian citizenship after acquiring the citizenship of another state.
