Russia is furious: it threatens to strike British military targets in Ukraine and beyond

This followed comments made by Foreign Secretary David Cameron last week that Ukraine had the right to strike targets on Russian territory.

The Foreign Office announced it had summoned the UK’s ambassador to Moscow, Nigel Casey, and warned him that Russia’s “response to strikes by Ukraine using British weapons on Russian territory could be any UK military facility and equipment inside and outside Ukraine.”

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that Cameron’s statement “de facto recognized the United Kingdom as a party to the conflict.”

“The ambassador was told that the Russian side views D. Cameron’s words as evidence of a serious escalation and confirmation that London is increasingly involved in hostilities on the side of Kyiv. Casey has been warned that any UK military facilities and equipment in Ukraine and abroad could be targeted in response to Ukrainian strikes using British weapons on Russian territory,” the Foreign Office said.

The ambassador was urged to “think about the consequences”. In addition, Russia demanded that D. Cameron deny his statements about the possibility of using British weapons for strikes on Russian territory.

UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron said in an interview last week that Ukraine has the right to strike targets in Russia.

He also said London had no reservations about how Ukrainian forces would use British-supplied weapons.

Russia previously announced it was planning nuclear weapons drills, claiming it was in response to “threats” from Western leaders, including French leader Emmanuel Macron.

Russian forces currently occupy several regions of Ukraine, which the Kremlin claims to have annexed and that they are part of Russian territory.

Neither Ukraine nor the West recognizes these annexations.
