The Curonian Spit National Park joked on its Facebook account on Friday that if you feel lonely, come to the Curonian Spit – today, for example, in Juodkrantė you will be accompanied everywhere by a company of chironomid mosquitoes.

“They won’t be jealous of you, they’re just celebrating their wedding. Millions of mosquitoes form poles in which the males fertilize the females, which then lay their eggs in nearby bodies of water: lagoons, puddles, other wet places.

Swallows, starlings, and other birds feed on adult, flying mosquito gnats, and the larvae that develop in the water are a great snack for aquatic animals,” the park’s specialists write.

Clouds of mosquito swarms have been swirling not only in the Curonian Spit for the first week, but also in the Pomerania region, especially in Ventė Horn.

Usually, there are more cranes in Ventės Raga, Svencelė, Dreverna.

Thrush mosquitoes live in water and hatch almost simultaneously. When the water temperature reaches a certain level, they rise in swarms. Naturalists call this phenomenon the wedding of these insects.

The cycle of the larval stage lasts several years. The abundance of mosquito bites also depends on the weather conditions, what was the winter like.
