After the opposition “Freedom and Justice” faction in the Vilnius City Council initiated an extraordinary meeting regarding the National Stadium, the mayor of the capital Valdas Benkunskas doubts that it will take place.

“It was according to the regulation and according to the law that such an initiative was shown, the request has been implemented, the meeting has been convened, but I highly doubt whether it will take place,” V. Benkunskas told BNS on the eve of the meeting scheduled for Friday.

“Council members are free to come to the meeting,” he added, noting that he did not know whether the governing conservative faction plans to attend the meeting and how many of its members will participate.

The Secretariat of “Freedom and Justice” issued a notice on Thursday, announcing that after collecting the required number of signatures of the opposition, a demand to convene an extraordinary meeting was registered.

His agenda includes two issues.

The party registered drafts of the council’s decision proposing to start negotiations on the takeover of the company implementing the stadium project, organizing separate international public procurements and dividing the construction of the facility into parts.

As the Vilnius municipality announced at the end of April, after taking into account the comments of the Public Procurement Service (VPT), the project of a multifunctional complex with a stadium may cost the city and the state 25 thousand. EUR – up to 157.23 million euros, but the future concessionaire would waive previously granted construction financing discounts.

The administration of the Vilnius city municipality will present the revised project to the capital city council on May 15.

Arvydas Avulis, the owner of the Hanner real estate company, which intends to take over the project of the National Stadium in Vilnius, has previously called on the state institutions to make decisions regarding the construction of the stadium faster.
