Medexperts remember more than one establishment

Leonas Urbanavičius, a forensic medical expert of the Alytus branch of the State Forensic Medicine Service, who has been working as a doctor in the capital of Dzūkija for more than 4 decades, remembers many medical experts’ establishments in the city.
They were located in the basement of a city dormitory, for some time in the prosecutor’s office building on Santaikas street.

Recently, he worked for almost two decades in the city center, on S.Darius and S.Girėnos streets, in premises belonging to the municipality. Since they were sold by the municipality through a public auction, not only medexperts, but also other institutions operating here, such as the Business Consulting Center, have to move out.

It is worth noting that the premises, the total area of which is 242 sq. meters, sold the first time at the initial price – 121 thousand. 500 euros. And they were purchased by the furniture manufacturing company “Alsotana” operating in the Alytus region.

What is the main amenity of the current premises?

From the beginning of this week, on May 7, the Alytus branch of the State Forensic Medicine Service moved to new premises once again. This time – to the Alytus County S. Kudirka Hospital, the former building of the Obstetrics Department (photo).

As L.Urbanavičius said, now the department will have the best working facilities during its existence in Alytus. And such a department has been operating in the capital of Dzūkija since the post-war period.

In the hospital, as in the city center, medexperts will use approximately the same size – almost 60 square meters. meter-sized premises. It was granted by the decision of the city council on the basis of use, paying only for communal services, for a period of five years with the possibility of extending the use for the same period.

L.Urbanavičius named the nearby morgue, where expert examinations of dead bodies are carried out, as the main convenience for working in these premises. Medical experts also perform body examinations of victims in various situations, such as after accidents, beatings or rapes.

There are currently five employees in the Alytus department. There is a shortage of specialists in this field both in Alytus and in some other medical expert departments operating in the country, of which there are eight in total. This was confirmed by the director of the State Forensic Medicine Service, Romas Raudys, stating that few people choose forensic medicine expert studies, and those who have completed them usually stay to work in the big cities of the country.

The mayor bypassed the council and the actual establishment

The mayor of Alytus, N.Cesiulis, cut the ribbon for the inauguration of the new premises provided to Alytus medical experts in the hospital in mid-March, when the actual inauguration was still a long way off – two months. Because medexperts could not move to new premises until they had a so-called hygiene passport to operate in the given premises and had not registered an activity license at the hospital’s current address.

However, N.Cesiulis put the horse before the cart not only in this place. He cut the ribbon for the establishment before the city council had made a decision on the allocation of space in the hospital to medical experts. This decision was made at the end of March. Although the ruling majority in the council is held by the social democrats represented by the mayor and its decision seems to be clear in advance, but maybe it is not worth demonstrating omnipotence while respecting the members of the council at least a little.
