A psychologist has identified what best helps protect the brain from Alzheimer’s and senile dementia – it is important not only for older people

--

This topic will be discussed at the conference by psychologist Laura Rimkutė, who will give a presentation on the topic: “Longevity of the brain and practical ways to maintain it”.

According to L. Rimkutė, brain health is important for longevity for several reasons. For example, a well-maintained brain can reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease or senile dementia.

“Furthermore, cognitive function, memory and thinking abilities, which are directly related to brain health, can affect a person’s ability to function independently and live a quality life, even in old age.”

If we dream of a long life, we probably all want that life to be of quality and to be able to enjoy it. This requires not only a healthy body, but also the most important part of the body – a healthy brain,” says the psychologist.

According to her, it is important for every person to know that our brain is plastic, it can change and changes throughout life.

“Learning, experiences and habits can affect the structure of the brain by strengthening or weakening certain connections. This means that our behavior and environment can greatly influence the health and function of the brain,” says the interviewer.

She reminds us that quality sleep is very important for our brain – during sleep, the brain removes toxins that accumulate during waking hours.

“With a lack of sleep, these toxins can cause long-term damage and affect brain function. Therefore, every person should do everything to make quality sleep a priority in his life,” emphasizes L. Rimkutė.

Chronic stress can also damage brain health, especially the hippocampus, which is responsible for learning and memory, she says, so learning to manage stress through meditation, yoga or other relaxation practices is very beneficial for the brain.

“Finally, a balanced diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and low in sugar can improve brain function and protect against degeneration.” Physical activity also provides many benefits for our brain and its longevity,” the psychologist says.

According to her, social activity is also important – connecting with friends and family members, participating in community activities can positively affect psychological well-being and reduce stress levels, which in turn supports brain health.

“Quality relationships are a great and important resource for our resilience and brain longevity. Just like continuous learning, forming new skills or learning languages can help keep the brain active,” says L. Rimkutė.

According to her, crosswords, sudoku, puzzles and other mental activities, such as learning a foreign language, help improve memory and thinking skills.

“So each of us should review our daily routine to see if there are activities and things in our routine that will help us have a healthy brain for longer.” After assessing which area you would like to strengthen, all that remains is to figure out how to introduce new, albeit small, habits into your daily life pleasantly and without great suffering,” says the psychologist.
