Klaipėda welcomed more than 80 of the most talented young geographers from various cities of Lithuania, who tested their strength in the Geography Olympiad for Lithuanian students. This year’s theme: “Mountains are the decoration of the earth”. Students had to overcome not only theoretical but also video tasks.
The Geography Olympiad is a great opportunity for young Earth science enthusiasts who have accumulated years of experience and knowledge to test their skills.
Eduardas Spiriajevas, head of the Social Geography and Regional Studies Center of Klaipėda University, was happy with such a large number of participants.
“It’s great that geography attracts so many young, talented students right here, to Klaipėda University,” said E. Spiriajevas.
The scientist said that such Olympiads help to develop schoolchildren’s awareness of the environment around them and develop intelligence.
“The World Knowledge Olympiad becomes not only a place for geographical knowledge, but also a place for meetings, sharing ideas and new friendships, encouraging talented young people to choose the path of a geography scientist, which helps to understand and shape the future of our world,” said E. Spiriaevs, who urged schoolchildren to choose geography studies.
According to the organizers, this event promotes the desire for knowledge and the spirit of exploration, develops critical thinking and decision-making skills.
“The goal of the Olympiad is to develop geographical worldview, to form and deepen geographical skills, to help students self-assess geographical knowledge,” said Angelė Pakamoriene, the deputy president of the Lithuanian Geography Teachers’ Association.
