At the meeting, the Prime Minister noted that the Lithuanian public is one of the most favorable in the entire Community, which only confirms the great benefits of membership for the country.
“It is a great pleasure to welcome you here in Vilnius, in commemoration of Europe Day and the anniversary of Lithuania’s membership in the European Union – our 20 years of success will continue. The amount of sincere efforts made by countries like Ukraine and Moldova in order to become part of our family is the best reminder of the EU’s achievements”, said I. Šimonytė in the report.
“The EU is our common home, a truly special project of peace and prosperity that we must protect and nurture by being open and helping those who believe in shared values and pursue membership without distraction. We must not only be proud of the success of the EU, but also defend it, strive for this space of success to grow”, she added.
In the meeting with the President of the EC, I. Šimonytė also paid attention to the issues of strengthening European security and support for Ukraine, as well as EU expansion. As the Prime Minister of Lithuania noted, it is important to start official accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova this half year.
At the meeting in the Government, it was also emphasized that despite Russia’s attempts to convince the West of the ineffectiveness of the sanctions, their effect is visible and the pressure must be increased. The new EU agreement on the transfer of profits from frozen Russian funds to Ukraine is the right and continuous direction, the meeting said.
