After the civic initiative “4 million Lithuania” failed to publish clips promoting the dual citizenship referendum in the media, well-known artists decided to hold a free concert for those who voted in it.

As Marija Šaraitė, the organizer of the initiative, announced on Thursday, the concert dedicated to those who voted in the referendum will take place on the evening of the election Sunday at the Vilnius Town Hall Square.

It is promised that the bands “Antikvariniai Kašpirovskis dantys”, “Zhalvarinis”, “TAS”, “Nouvelle”, “Liedogs”, “Plié”, Aurelijs Sirgedas from the group “Siela”, Viktoras Diawara and other performers will perform at the concert.

In this way, the initiators hope to encourage Lithuanians to participate in the referendum on maintaining dual citizenship. The concert is held on Sunday at 18:00, and it will be possible to cast your vote at the polling stations until 20:00.

According to M. Šaraitė, not only well-known music groups joined the “4 million Lithuania” initiative, but also the opinion makers of the country’s social networks.

The participants of the initiative announced last week that the advertising campaign created specifically for the referendum ran into the restrictions of the Central Election Commission (CEC). Video and audio clips urging people to vote “for” dual citizenship are planned to be published on television, radio channels, and news portals.

However, the CEC stated that these clips should be considered political advertising, which must be labeled and distributed with the source of its funding indicated.

Commission representative Indrė Ramanavičienė previously informed BNS that paid advertising related to the referendum political campaign can be paid for only by the campaign participant, in this case, the group of Seimas members who initiated the referendum.

The referendum on the legalization of multiple citizenship will be held on May 12 together with the first round of the presidential election.

Those who emigrated after the restoration of independence on March 11, 1990, currently, with some exceptions, cannot have dual citizenship.

The Constitutional Court has clarified that only by amending the Constitution through a referendum can the possibility of having dual citizenship be opened to citizens of Lithuania who acquired the citizenship of other countries after the restoration of independence.

In order for multiple citizenship to be legalized, more than half of all citizens of Lithuania with the right to vote must vote for it in a referendum.
