The so-called “black spots” characterized by high accidents have decreased on Lithuanian national roads, 12 people have died in these places in the last four years, the Transport Competence Agency (TKA) announces.

This year’s black spot map shows 33 “black spots” – five spots less than last year.

196 road users were injured in accidents.

According to the TKA, 13 out of 33 such dangerous places were caused by traffic accidents caused by drunken, unlicensed drivers or drivers who left the scene of the traffic accident.

A quarter of all traffic accidents at intersections are left-turning or U-turn collisions, 41% on road sections. consists of entrances for pedestrians or bicycles.

87 percent on country roads. among the affected traffic participants are vehicle drivers and passengers, at that time 45 percent in settlements. accidents happen to the most vulnerable road users.

According to the “black spots” map, the most of them – 10 – are in Kaunas county, Klaipėda, Šiauliai and Panevėžys counties – 4 each, Vilnius – 3.

According to TKA, deficiencies in pedestrian crossings, unsafe left turns and failure to ensure the safety of road users at intersections regulated by traffic lights are the most common.

According to the agency’s data, the losses caused to the Lithuanian economy in the black spots identified this year due to the affected traffic participants amount to 10.33 million. euros.

TKA experts made suggestions on how to improve traffic safety at each such emergency point.

“Black spots” are road sections where traffic accidents are concentrated. A “black spot” is determined if there have been four or more traffic accidents in which people were killed or injured during the last four years.
