According to the criminal case, in 2024 April 14 a police officer, in the performance of her duties, brought persons arrested for violation of public order to one of the Kaunas police watch stations. Then, after receiving permission from her colleague, she sat down at his desk to use the computer and noticed a wallet with a 100-euro bill sticking out of it. Suspecting that the room was being filmed, she took her wallet, took out the money and put it in her trouser pocket. A total of 215 euros.
The owner of the wallet, who noticed the theft in the evening, watched the videos and, suspecting that his money could have been embezzled by a police officer, informed the officials of the Immunity Board about it.
The extremely quick pre-trial investigation was conducted by the officers of the Kaunas District Department of the Immunity Board of the Police Department, the investigation was organized and led by the prosecutor of the Organized Crime and Corruption Investigation Department of the Kaunas District Prosecutor’s Office. The case was closed in a simplified procedure, after writing a statement on closing the case with a criminal order of the court, because the accused police officer confessed about the theft, returned the stolen money and sincerely regretted her act.
If the accused disagrees with the punishment imposed by the court’s criminal order, she has the right to request a court hearing within fourteen days of receiving it. If this right is not exercised, the court’s criminal order becomes effective and is not subject to appeal.
