Klaipėda residents who went for a walk to the seaside along the Baltic coast observed a rarely seen sight, which for some reminded them of mud rising from the depths of the water, while others recognized an annual natural phenomenon. Specialists hastened to calm down – the waves washed away pollen accumulations, which spread as spring progresses.

Seduced by the warm weather, the people of Klaipėda are already drawn to the sea. Some dared to swim, but others were afraid to even splash in the water, they were discouraged by the brownish-green waves that washed the shore.

An unclear phenomenon by the sea caused the townspeople to doubt whether the water of an unusual color appeared on the shore is contaminated.

“It’s probably some natural phenomenon here, or maybe it’s just raised sand, but you still don’t want to put your feet in such water,” remarked one resident of Klaipėda.

Žigintas Narmontas, director of the “Klaipėdos beaches” institution, said that this phenomenon occurs in the water every spring and does not pose a danger to residents.

“From the nearby trees, the wind brings pollen towards the sea, which the sea blows to the shore. When the currents change, they will no longer be in the sea. It is a natural phenomenon that is not really dangerous for people”, explained Ž. Narmont.
