You will never forget the terrible incident with the hot air balloon: people were lying on their stomachs, the man did not move at all

The hot air balloon with seven people crashed into three buildings, power lines, and trees. People fell out of the bag. Two persons who flew in a hot air balloon ended up in intensive care.

Residents of Vilkai Kampos in the Šilutė district say they will never forget the horrific scenes: in the evening, around half past seven, the locals saw a hot air balloon cross the trees of the village, crash into the wall of a farm building and roll over the roof.

Then the balloon was thrown in the same way into two more farm buildings, hit the street and trees. It seemed to people that the bag was on fire, and it became even more terrifying when the passengers fell from it.

“We were in the gazebo and heard a crash, so we thought it was a thunderstorm. But then the balloon that was hitting the bag flew by. Later, one person fell and rolled down the hill. We ran to that boy because he fell right next to us,” said Rasa Vanagienė, a resident of Vilkų Kampos.

“That 15-year-old child was very excited, scared. We gave him water, covered him, put ice because he had a very big lump on his head. We helped as much as we could, because the express took a very long time – about half an hour, if not more,” testified a resident of Vilkų Kampos.

The teenager told local residents that the hot air balloon flight was a Mother’s Day gift to his family.

When the electric wires fell, the car was damaged, but the local residents did not care about the losses. They rushed to help the people in the balloon as quickly as possible.

“People were lying on their stomachs by that balloon. The man did not move at all. I thought he was dead, but as far as I know, everyone was alive,” said Greta Vanagaitė, a resident of Vilkai kampus.

Firefighters had to search the village for injured people.

“Three people – a man, a woman and a child – were near the balloon, where it fell. Two people were found a few hundred meters from the scene in the meadow, it was a man and a woman. And two more people came to the scene of the incident themselves,” reported Mindaugas Lengvinas, senior specialist of the Force Management Department.

All the passengers who flew in the hot air balloon were taken to hospitals. Adolescents are treated at Klaipėda Children’s Hospital, and adults at Klaipėda University and Šilute hospitals. Two went to intensive care, but doctors report that the condition of all victims is stable. One was sent home for treatment.

Police and experts are investigating what happened to the balloon, why the pilot did not control it.

Specialists say that the pilot who flew people in a hot air balloon is a professional with more or less 10 years of experience.
