The Ministry of Economy (M) announced on Tuesday that together with the State Food and Veterinary Service (VMVT) they are strengthening the control of food in Lithuania, with the aim of closing the way for illegal food to Russia.

According to the ministry, this is done in response to the previous demands of the oil producer that cucumbers and tomatoes grown in Russia enter Lithuania through Belarus and Poland, by falsifying their origin documents.

We have heard rumors that Lithuania may be trying to sell Russian products by pointing out that they are grown in the European Union. That’s why we have combined the information provided to consumers about the fruit and the origin of the product for verification. Product safety is checked by laboratory tests, said VMVT head Audron Mikalauskien.

The Ministry announces that laboratory tests are being carried out on products entering Lithuania, and Austrian laboratories are also being considered for determining the origin of the fruit and vegetable. The representatives of VMVT performing controls also cooperate with their colleagues in Poland.

According to the head of VMVT, the laboratory test results obtained so far met the requirements of the legal act.

The Vice-Minister of the Economy Vytenis Tomkus repeats that the most effective restrictions on the products transported to Russia will operate on the scale of the entire European Union (EU).

Once a product enters the common EU market, it is much more difficult to control its movement later. Therefore, we should aim to limit access to the product, V. Tomkus is quoted in the message.

At the beginning of April, the Lithuanian iltnami association announced that Russia-grown vegetables, mainly cucumbers and tomatoes, were entering Lithuania through Belarus and Poland, due to falsified documents of origin.

According to the producer, such production is sold in Lithuania several times cheaper than locally or grown in Poland or Latvia.

In March, Lithuania together with Latvia, Estonia, Poland and the European Union called on the European Commission to analyze the possibility of limiting the import of food products originating in Russia and Belarus to the Community.
