The Vilnius District Municipality together with the State Forestry Directorate of the State Forestry Corporation signed a cooperation agreement on the transportation of wood on the local roads and streets of the Vilnius District Municipality.
About 25 thousand are currently stored in the territory of Vilnius district municipality. etc. of the resulting wood, which is cut from state forests according to the established annual cutting norms and from sanitary forest cuttings, which are carried out mainly due to damage caused by the massively spread bark beetle tipogravus in spruce trees. Stored wood is state property. The income from the sold wood is a part of the Lithuanian state budget, therefore the produced wood products must be sold and exported.
“Roads damaged by logging trucks, on which you often have to damage your cars, is a big problem faced by the residents of our district. In order to properly address this situation, we signed a cooperation agreement with foresters. Its essence is to carry out smooth removal of wood and road maintenance, thus ensuring traffic safety. Foresters, who have the right to transport wood, have undertaken to repair the roads damaged by their vehicles. Everyone will feel the benefits of the contract. Traffic conditions will improve for the residents, foresters will be able to smoothly remove wood without unnecessary interference, and the municipality will incur less expenses in the maintenance of roads damaged by logging trucks”, says Vilnius District Mayor Robert Duchnevič about the agreement.
On March 27 the mayor met with the General Director of the State Forestry Authority Valdus Kaubre, the Director of Timber Harvesting and Trade Ramuna Petkevičienė, the heads of the Šalčininkai and Nemenčinė regional divisions and representatives of the problematic wards – Kalveliai, Marijampolis, Mickūnai, Rudamina and Rukainai, discussed the fundamental problems and discussed possible compromises in solving this problem.
After signing the cooperation agreement today, the State Forestry Office undertakes to repair the damaged road surfaces of the local roads and streets of the Vilnius District Municipality in order to ensure safe driving conditions and not pose a threat to traffic safety. The Office of State Forests will sign the acts of recognition of the repaired roads and streets of local significance of the Vilnius District Municipality as suitable for use and the performance of maintenance works.
