The court recognized the former director of Kaunas polyclinic and his sons as bribe takers

The Kaunas District Court, which satisfied the prosecutor’s complaint, on Thursday convicted the former director of Kaunas Šilainiai Polyclinic Vidmantas Obelieniis and his son Gytis Obelieniis for bribery.

As the representative of the court, Milda Kryžė, told BNS, 7.3 thousand was allocated to V. Obelieni. EUR fine, as well as recovering the amount corresponding to the confiscated EUR 868 bribe.

3.4 thousand was awarded to G. Obelieni for bribery. EUR fine.

This judgment entered into force on the day of its announcement.

V. Obelienius is charged with the fact that in 2014, with the help of his family member, he provoked to give, agreed and promised to accept a bribe by concluding a contract for the provision of services with a private medical company.

According to this contract, the doctors of the Šilainiai Polyclinic provided services to the patients of the private company in Kaunas and the Kaunas region, while the patients of the polyclinic were exclusively sent to the units of the private company.

According to law enforcement, the transfer of bribes under the guise of transactions took place through the small association headed by G. Obelieniaus.

The case brought on the basis of the investigation by the officers of the Special Investigation Service (STT) was transferred to the Kaunas district court in 2018. At the end of last year, the court acquitted V. Obelienis and his son, but the prosecutor’s office appealed the verdict.

The Kaunas District Court continues to examine another case regarding possible abuse at the Šilainiai polyclinic, fictitious employment of the disabled and fraudulently acquired property.

In the case handed over to the court in 2021, V. Obelienius is accused of abuse, his son and five other individuals are accused of fraud and falsification of documents, some of them are accused of fraudulent accounting management and abuse.

Three closed joint-stock companies and one small partnership are also accused of fraud and falsification of documents.

In this case, the Employment Service has submitted over 589 thousand euros, Kaunas municipality – over 45 thousand. euro civil lawsuits.
