The internship will take place in July-August, and students will be awarded a stipend of 2,000 euros (1,000 euros per month). In addition to scholarships, LMT will also provide funds for internships. A total of 750 thousand is planned to be allocated to this program this year. euros.

Student summer scientific practice is the longest-running LMT tool for students, the purpose of which is to give students the opportunity to conduct scientific research in practice, acquire new knowledge, deepen analytical and scientific abilities, develop skills in writing and presenting scientific papers, get to know the Lithuanian scientific community and scientific infrastructure, and as well as acquire work social skills.

Since 2005 LMT supported about 2,700 students during the summer, last year alone 198 students from Lithuanian and foreign scientific institutions were financed. LMT finances students’ scientific practices in all fields of science and art: nature, technology, medicine and health, agriculture, humanities, social sciences, stage and screen arts, fine arts.

Places of practice can be chosen from the list of topics

According to LMT chairman Gintaras Valinčius, one of LMT’s priorities is to promote the growth of human potential in science with inclusion and support instruments targeted at students and early career researchers. Therefore, LMT, by organizing this competition, gives students the opportunity to test their abilities as future scientists at the very beginning of their scientific activities.

“This year, the abundance and variety of topics proposed by the future practice managers during the first phase is pleasantly surprising. 454 topics were submitted for selection, from which 183 topics were selected by the experts delegated by the LMT. Such involvement of the scientific community is pleasing and confirms that the competition is not only relevant and necessary, but also that the Lithuanian scientific community is active and has great potential to share experience with young people. The topics presented for this year’s competition stood out for their attractiveness and relevance, and this shows that the practice managers paid a lot of attention to what to interest and attract future interns”, says G. Valinčius.

This year, LMT introduced an innovation – doctoral students can also be supervisors of student practice. When selecting practice places, one of the priorities was dedicated to the topic proposed by the doctoral student. “This year, 28 doctoral students were selected as supervisors of practical work. It is a good opportunity and new opportunities for young researchers who have chosen a career as a scientist to test themselves by leading small research projects in science and arts”, G. Valinčius emphasized.

Foreign students are also invited

According to G. Valinčius, one of the most important goals of LMT is to create a new attractive environment for scientific research in Lithuania, not only for our country’s young scientists. Great attention is also paid to the international student community, attracting young talents from foreign countries and creating favorable conditions for them to realize their scientific ideas right here in Lithuania. Last year, 18 students from the United States of America, Ukraine, Sweden, France, the Netherlands, Latvia, Poland, and Bulgaria completed summer internships at Lithuanian research and study institutions.

What you need to know when applying

First-, second-cycle and full-time students are invited to participate in the competition, except for those who are in their final year at the time of application. The weighted average of the grades of all subjects studied by students in the last semester must be at least 8 points.

Students choose a practice guide from a list of selected topics according to their fields of study and can apply for no more than 2 practice places. Later, the internship supervisors will choose no more than one student according to their proposed internship topic – this is to ensure the maximum quality of knowledge and experience imparted during the internship.

Foreign students or students who carry out a summer internship at a Lithuanian scientific institution located in a different city than the intended place of summer internship are allocated additional funds for accommodation.

Those who wish to participate in the student summer internship competition implemented by LMT until May 29, 2024. must submit a curriculum vitae, a certificate of study results, a motivation letter and choose no more than 2 topics of interest. Applications are submitted in the LMT system.

After the internship, LMT will organize a conference during which the students will present the results of the summer internship.
