According to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center, the seismic event was recorded around 11:40 a.m. at the Slyterė seismological station located approximately 70 km northeast of Ventspils, but the exact location of the event is not yet known.

It is likely that it was an extremely weak earthquake, which should not have caused noticeable damage to the infrastructure.

It is reported that the most active shaking was felt in Liepaja, where the windows shook.

Viesturs Zandersons, head of the Department of Geology at the University of Liepaja, told the portal liepajniekim.lv that it is still difficult to say what caused the earthquake.

According to Latvian seismologists, this country usually records small seismic events that are related to human activities, such as military exercises.

The last time a natural earthquake in the Baltic region was recorded in 2022, its strength reached 2.3 on the Richter scale. Stronger earthquakes rarely occur in the region.

Several people under the center’s post said they felt the earthquake. However, it is difficult to say that this was actually the case.

Latvia’s TVNET readers also report that they noticed the earthquake. One TVNET reader writes that lamps, handles and a coffee cup were shaking, and “my subconscious said it was an earthquake, but there was no information on any online maps, and there can’t be an earthquake in Latvia.”

LTV weather editor Toms Bricis told “X” that the data of the Latvian seismological station in Slyterė is currently being analyzed. Residents of Latvia who have felt earthquake vibrations are invited to report them to the Latvian Environmental Geology and Meteorology Center (LVGMC) by filling out a form.

LVGMC confirmed that small tremors were recorded at the Slyterė seismological station.
