According to specialists, the strength of the recorded seismic event was probably below 3 points – such an earthquake would not cause any damage to buildings or infrastructure.

Witnesses write on social networks that the earthquake was felt in Liepaja and other parts of Kurzeme.

“The earthquake, if it really happened, was local, as it was recorded at only one monitoring station,” the Latvian Center for Geology and Meteorology said in a statement.

Seismological monitoring in Latvia is carried out at one monitoring station – Šlyterės, but the data is also compared with information from stations in Estonia, Lithuania, Finland, Poland and Denmark.

As the center explains, more accurate information about the location of the recorded earthquake will be available only after a more detailed analysis of the data.

Seismic events observed in Latvia are mostly small and related to human activities, such as military exercises.

The last natural earthquake in the Baltic region was recorded in 2022 in the north of Estonia, with a magnitude of 2.3.

Natural earthquakes in the region rarely exceed 3 points.
