“I gave 100 EUR, I will prove it”

It all started a good year ago. The man from Gargždi, who called the medics on the general emergency phone, soon called 112 again and reported that when the medics arrived, they allegedly broke the Hippocratic Oath – they allegedly mistreated him, and he even gave a 100-euro bribe to the paramedic.

“I gave EUR 100, I will prove it,” the man explained immediately after the incident.

After receiving the report, the officers responded and checked the doctors. The officers did indeed find a 100-euro bill in the ambulance. As if everything was clear, but the man who introduced himself as the victim was drunk and not very friendly.

in 2023 February 13 around 11.29 p.m. the officers who received the report went to visit the complaining Gargždi resident. It was recorded that at 11:47 p.m. the alcohol meter the man was found to have a blood alcohol level of 2.46.

The man stubbornly kept to his position – he allegedly gave a 100 EUR bribe to the paramedic, and she took the money. Due to the man’s statement and the fact that the money was found, a criminal case was brought against the doctors who worked that night.

During the investigation, the real story of the “bribe” was revealed

Police briefings published information about the investigation that had begun and that the doctors had become suspects. However, the investigation of the case turned in an unexpected direction – they have already received a summons to the court not as accused bribe takers, but as defamed victims.

The man from Gargždi, who was on the bench, said that on the day he accused the doctors, he called them and asked for medicine. The paramedic examined him, and the man demanded some medication and offered to pay for it. The man did not hide in court that he was carrying money, but he testified that he had already explained that he had lost the money that the police found after his report.

“I was drunk, I had quite a few hundreds in my pants pocket and I pulled them out, I waved the money around and I could have just lost it,” the man explained to the court.

Flaunted money and threw it around

The doctors said that they return the found items and money, and there are rules for the transfer of material values left by patients. When they arrived at the call, they met not the nicest person, who boasted that he had enough money, threw it around, explained that he could pay for everything and give money to doctors for coffee, a restaurant or other expenses. The doctors refused the money, but after asking the aggressive patient out of the car and leaving, they saw that they did not put all the money in the hands of the arsonist.

Drunk patients are nothing new to doctors. Doctors also know this gargoyle – in just five days, the man called them five times. The doctors explained that he really should have known that in case of health problems, there is no need to pay separately for the work of emergency doctors and medicines.

According to the data of the case, the fact that the money was not accidentally lost by accident is also evidenced by the calls to the General Help Center.

“The man who gave the bribe […] he confirmed at least ten times by calling the General Assistance Center and the police officers who came to him,” the case states.

Seeking acquittal, he heard a harsher court sentence

The man who called the doctors and flaunted the money in front of them admitted to the paramedic how much he had drunk that evening. The man who turned from the alleged victim to the accused tried to evade punishment. After hearing an unfavorable verdict in the court of first instance, he proved his truth in the Klaipėda district court. However, the prosecutor managed to get the man convicted not only for making a false report, but also for giving a bribe.

The quest to be acquitted because he was drunk cost the man even more. The Klaipėda District Court announced that the man from Gargždi was found guilty of bribery and must pay a fine of 7,500 euros for this act.

“To combine this sentence with the verdict of the Klaipėda District Chamber of the Klaipėda District Court by way of partial addition […] a fine of 5,000 euros was imposed and a final penalty of 10,000 euros was imposed,” the court announced.

The man who flaunted the money got the right to pay the fine within 12 months. The sum of the alleged bribe – 100 euros, according to the court’s decision, went to the paramedic to cover the civil part of the claim.
