Vilnius County Police found a bag with what is suspected to be cannabis in a car stopped near the Gariūnai market place. Later, two travel suitcases were found in the apartment of the arrested driver, and they contained eleven kilograms of cannabis.
The preliminary value of the detected cannabis at the wholesale price can reach about 70 thousand. euros, the police said.
Officers of the Criminal Police Organized Crime Investigation Board of Vilnius County Chief Police Commissariat are conducting a pre-trial investigation into illegal possession of a very large amount of narcotics. This is punishable by imprisonment from 10 to 15 years.
The pre-trial investigation was started after an Opel Insignia car was stopped for inspection last week in Vilnius, near Gariūnai market place.
When the officers started to check the documents of the car and the driver, they turned out to be in disarray – the driver did not have a technical inspection of the car and mandatory civil liability insurance, the car interior smelled like the smell of cannabis.
It was decided to check the car in more detail – a bag was observed on the back seat, which contained nine transparent vacuum-sealed plastic packages containing a green plant material, suspected to be cannabis.
A pre-trial investigation was immediately opened for illegal possession of narcotic or psychotropic substances with the intent to distribute them or illegal possession of a very large quantity of narcotic or psychotropic substances.
After the officers of the Criminal Police Organized Crime Investigation Board of the Chief Police Commissariat of Vilnius County took over the pre-trial investigation, the possible place of residence of the person who transported cannabis was determined in Vilnius.
After a search of the apartment, two suitcases were found with suspected cannabis. About eleven kilograms of cannabis were found and seized, which were similarly packaged in the same way as those found in the car. Packaging materials, a vacuuming machine, and other items significant for the pre-trial investigation were also found.
A person in possession of these narcotic substances is subject to the strictest pre-trial detention – three months’ detention. The detainee faces imprisonment from 10 to 15 years for the crime he is accused of.
The officers of the organized crime investigation of the Vilnius County Chief Police Commissariat of the Criminal Police are continuing the investigation in order to identify all persons who contributed to this criminal act, therefore it is believed that there will be more arrested persons.
The pre-trial investigation is organized and led by the prosecutor of the Organized Crime and Corruption Investigation Department of the Vilnius District Prosecutor’s Office.
As noted by police officers investigating this type of criminal acts, cannabis remains the most popular psychoactive substance on the Lithuanian market.
