As the reconstruction of the Vilnius airport accelerates, important changes are announced. From April 29, the car access to the passenger departure terminal is permanently closed. From now on, the so-called “Kiss and Fly” zone will operate only in two parking lots, where it will be possible to stop for 15 minutes.
As announced in the press release of Vilnius Airport, it will be possible to disembark and say goodbye to passengers at the PC and P3 parking lots.
“Next year, we will open the new departure terminal, the throughput of which will double: from 1,200 passengers per hour to 2,400. In order for the capacities to function smoothly, this year the reorganization of the parking lots and the traffic scheme is being actively implemented, which will ensure convenient access to the new terminal and allow better control of traffic flows”, says Arnas Dūmanas, Head of the Infrastructure Development Department of Lithuanian Airports.
From April 29 passengers brought by accompanying persons or arriving in their own cars will be directed to other places intended for short-term stopovers or long-term parking. The old ramp leading to the entrance to the departure terminal will only be accessible to airport shuttles and passengers with individual needs who have filled out the form in advance.
In order to control the temporary changes in the approaches to Vilnius airport, more than 10 employees are employed, who will provide information and help passengers orientate themselves during the reconstruction period 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The construction of the new departure terminal of the airport will be completed in October 2024. According to the plan for the transformation of the traffic scheme, the area of the car parking and other traffic area is planned to be expanded to 17,000 square meters. m. All the currently existing sites will be connected into one whole – this solution will double the traffic capacity compared to the current one.
During the implementation of the project, it is planned to renew the surface sewage collection system, all surfaces, lighting, install roofs, bicycle parking spaces, charging stations for electric cars, and green the area.
From June 3rd, the third and last phase of the reconstruction of the accesses will begin, which will change the movement pattern again.
