Gediminas Kirkilas escorted to his last journey: funeral – Antakalnis cemetery

The farewell ceremony for the Prime Minister of the 14th Government of the Republic of Lithuania Gediminas Kirkilas took place in the large armory hall of the “Ritualas” funeral home (Olandų St. 22) on April 23-24.

On Wednesday, those who wanted to pay their respects to the former prime minister could do so until noon.

V. Adamkus: he was a prominent politician

The outgoing president Valdas Adamkus, who came to say goodbye to the former prime minister who died at the weekend, said that Gediminas Kirkilas valued the state and the person with his actions, and made a significant contribution to the restoration process of Lithuania.

“It seems to me that he was an outstanding Lithuanian politician, because he valued the state, the person, and not some private organization to which he belonged,” V. Adamkus told reporters outside the armory hall.

“Through his work, it seems to me that he is very clearly involved in the process of restoring our state, we can only be happy about his contribution and example for future generations,” said the president.

“You could count on him”

Speaker of the Seimas Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen said that she remembers G. Kirkilas as a benevolent, calm person, a very insightful politician, a person with whom it was interesting and good to talk, and who, as she said, “sincerely cared about the affairs of the state.

“He will be greatly missed, because he was one of the few people in politics that you could rely on, regardless of whether you were his colleague or opponent,” the Speaker of the Seimas told reporters.

V. Čmilytė-Nielsen says that she communicated with the former prime minister more than once, and the last time she saw him was last Friday in the Seimas, when G. Kirkilas participated in the conference held there. Therefore, his sudden death shocked, the Speaker of the Seimas did not hide.

The urn is taken out on Wednesday at 12:00 p.m. The funeral will take place in Vilnius Antakalnis cemetery.

On Tuesday, President Gitanas Nausėda, Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė, members of the Seimas, Government, and former party colleagues paid their last respects to G. Kirkil.

The death of the former prime minister was announced on Saturday morning. As recently as Friday, G. Kirkilas visited the Seimas and participated in a conference, Seimas Speaker Viktorija Čmilytė Nielsen said about this.

G. Kirkilas did not complain about his health, he was playing tennis with his friends a couple of days ago.

In 2006-2008, G. Kirkilas served as Prime Minister.

However, both before and after that he was an active politician.
