Vita Kavo from Vilnius was walking in nature, in the Bukta forest in the Marijampole district, when she noticed a bright blue object puffing in the distance near the swamp.
The woman decided to go and check it out – you rarely see such colors in the forest in early spring. When she got closer, she saw that it was a frog, and when she looked around, she saw that there were a lot of them.
The woman was not jokingly surprised, but also shared the photo of the frog in one of the social network groups.
Revealed why frogs are blue
Gerard Paškevičius, a specialist in the care of exotic animals, better known as the Jungle Man, told the news portal tv3.lt what frogs are and why they have these unusual colors.
G. Paškevičius assures that this is a completely normal phenomenon – male pointed-nosed frogs turn blue during mating to attract the attention of females, and when spawning is over – that’s it, they turn back to their normal, brown color, completely unremarkable.
“Male bullfrogs turn blue, and the throat of male meadow frogs can turn blue, but not always. The more mature the male, the more beautiful his bluing.
Young males do not turn blue as much, and the more mature, the more blue. Females do not change color at all, they remain the usual brown color.
People very actively started sending me photos of blue frogs and asking what the phenomenon is and why they are blue. This year there are more of them and they are bolder,” the Jungle Man assures.
People can notice these frogs for about three more weeks, because they started turning blue quite recently – a few days ago, so those who want to admire this phenomenon can look for frogs in wet places, near forests, meadows or drainage ditches.
