Satya Nadella spoke to President Joko Widodo, often referred to simply as Jokowi in his country, at the Jakarta presidency before giving a speech on artificial intelligence in the Indonesian capital.

“Today, I am pleased to announce the $1.7 billion $100 million in data center investments to build the latest and greatest AI infrastructure in Indonesia,” Nadella told the crowd, adding that data center construction in Indonesia will begin soon.

“We will be at the forefront of this wave, providing the necessary next-generation AI infrastructure,” he said.

“Our ultimate goal is to empower every Indonesian and every company to take advantage of this new big wave of AI.”

Microsoft will train 840,000 Indonesians to work with AI, he said.

Previously, S. Nadella had told President Jokowi that the technology giant would “invest heavily” in AI infrastructure and cloud computing over the next four years, Communications and Informatics Minister Budi Arie Setiadis said in a press release.

According to the head of Microsoft, this will be the “biggest single investment” in the entire 29-year history of the company’s activities in this country, explained Budi Arie Setiadis.

Having started developing generative AI and in 2023 amounting to 13 billion Microsoft has received a lot of attention from investors after signing a cooperation agreement with OpenAI, the developer of the ChatGPT program.
