The TOS is a formidable multiple launch missile system equipped with a rotary launcher capable of carrying up to 24 unguided missiles with thermobaric warheads. She can destroy several city blocks with one hit.
The main role of the TOS system is to provide support to infantry and armored units. However, an important structural flaw of this system is the limited firing range. Due to the relatively short firing range – from 400-600 m to 4500 m – these systems are vulnerable to attacks by drones and mortars.
This artillery system was developed as a means of attacking enemy entrenched positions and lightly armored military vehicles, especially in open terrain. Victims near the center of TOS-1’s blast radius are crushed to death. Excessive pressure can break bones, put out eyes, cause internal bleeding, damage eardrums, intestines and other internal organs. It also sucks the air out of the victim’s lungs – so they can also die from suffocation.
