Slovakia reported on Thursday that the number of Ukrainian men of conscription age crossing the border illegally had more than doubled in the year before Ukraine’s new mobilization law took effect.

The Border Guard said 338 Ukrainians were detained and released in the first four months of this year, compared with 166 during the same period in 2023.

“In the first week of May, we detained 45 men at the ‘green border’,” said Agnesa Kopernicka, a spokeswoman for the Slovak border police. “During the same period last year, this number was four.”

A new law will come into force in Ukraine this month that will make it harder to avoid mobilization.

Since the start of the Russian invasion in 2022, Ukrainian men aged 18-60 have been banned from leaving the country and many have tried to flee illegally.

Kopernicka said that Ukrainian men crossing the border are detained, given a permit to be in Slovakia and then released.

“Since the beginning of the war, there has been no readmission of immigrants from Slovakia to Ukraine,” she said.

According to her, in March, one Ukrainian border patrol – unarmed and dressed in civilian clothes – crossed the border.

According to border guards, 1,484 Ukrainians have been detained at the border since the beginning of the Russian invasion.

Ukraine’s border service said this week it had found the bodies of three Ukrainian men in the Tisza River on the border with Romania, another route often used to evade mobilization.
