According to information from The Daily Telegraph, the company itself bases such a move exclusively on commercial interests related to the decline in demand for the vaccine. But the decision could also have been prompted by a legal process initiated by those affected by the side effects of the vaccine.
According to the company’s March 5 decision, from May 7 the vector vaccine “Vaxzevria” can no longer be used in the territory of the EU.
The product will be withdrawn from the UK and other markets in the coming months. The representatives of the company indicated that the production of the mentioned vaccine was discontinued because more effective preparations appeared on the market, which can better protect against new strains of the virus.
“We are proud of the role that Vaxzevria played in the fight against the pandemic. In its first year of use, it saved 6.5 million lives and distributed more than 3 billion doses worldwide,” the company said in a statement. new vaccines against different strains of COVID-19, demand for Vaxzevria has declined, so we have discontinued the product and are no longer marketing it.”
Recently, AstraZeneca admitted that its drug against COVID-19 may have caused thrombosis, but did not provide numbers – how many such cases ended in death or disability.
