The customs officers did not allow the cars allegedly transported to Belarus to carry out the export procedure and started a pre-trial investigation for violation of international sanctions and smuggling.

Customs officers detained two electric Tesla Cybertruck pickups, saying that they could be transported to Russia through Belarus, thereby violating European Union (EU) sanctions.

As the customs informed on Tuesday, two pickup trucks manufactured in 2023 costing more than 200,000 EUR were detained at the Alinink road post on May 7.

The customs officials did not allow the cars allegedly transported to Belarus to carry out the export procedure and started a pre-trial investigation for violation of international sanctions and smuggling.

Officials say that these vehicles will later be transferred and registered in Russia. Since 2014, the European Union has been imposing export sanctions on passenger cars.

Both cars are detained and stored in the premises of Lithuanian customs. The persons driving them were released after questioning.

In carrying out the detention, the customs declares that it is cooperating with the US authorities, which are implementing international sanctions. The pre-trial investigation is led by the Vilnius District Prosecutor’s Office.

Lithuanian customs indicates that it has shortened the export controls of luxury passenger cars.

Last year, it was officially established that almost every second car exported to the EU by Kazakhstan, Belarus, Uzbekistan and other third countries, with a value of over 50,000 EUR, later entered the Russian market.
