In southern Italy, on the island of Sicily, almost the entire repair crew died in an accident at work. Five men suffocated after landing in the sewer manifold. The condition of the sixth worker is very serious, he was taken to the hospital. Representatives of Italian construction workers complain that the cause of the tragedy could have been too little training of temporary workers, especially in the field of work safety.

One worker was the first to descend into the sewer collector. When he didn’t show up, five more came down. The seventh member of the brigade, unable to contact them anymore, called rescuers.

“This tragedy must make us think, because it is not the first time that accidents at work have been recorded. Here we are talking about contract workers – temporary workers,” said Alfio Mannino, the representative of the Secretary of the Sicilian Builders’ Union.

The entire LNK report is in the video:

Deep sewers can accumulate gases that are either poisonous or simply displace the oxygen we need to breathe. But they can be detected with special devices.

“It says more and more that we have to change the quality of work organization, because either we will find out the roots of this phenomenon, or indeed, given the way the labor market has become, these will be more and more frequent phenomena.” When temporary workers or workers on short-term contracts are employed, there is always a lack of training and safety elements, which is unacceptable,” said A. Mannino.

Sicilian police would not comment on who exactly worked in the repair team, but said the dead included a brigade leader who himself ran a small repair company.
