In an interview earlier this week, she stressed that there is already a famine in the northern part of the Palestinian enclave, which she predicts could spread to the south.

“We’re asking and we’re asking for a cease-fire and for unhindered access to the Gaza Strip – to various ports, various border crossings,” McCain said.

WFP is one of many humanitarian organizations working to ensure that as much humanitarian aid as possible reaches the Gaza Strip.

On Friday, the WFP reported that food supplies to the Palestinian enclave had improved slightly, although the risk of famine remained.

Israel regularly accuses the UN and other non-governmental organizations of not distributing aid quickly enough.

Meanwhile, humanitarian organizations accuse Israel of imposing various restrictions and inspections that they say are slowing the delivery of aid to Gazans.

The war between Israel and Hamas followed the Palestinian movement’s Oct. 7 attack in southern Israel that killed 1,170 people, mostly civilians, according to official figures.

In the attack, Hamas militants took about 250 hostages, 128 of whom Israel says remain in the Gaza Strip, including 35 hostages who died.

After promising to destroy Hamas, Israel launched a massive military offensive. The Health Ministry of the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip said at least 34,654 people had been killed during the war in the territory.
