King Charles III, who is undergoing treatment for cancer, returns to the public eye: this is an important occasion | Names

--

The King and his wife, Queen Camilla, are due to visit a cancer treatment center and meet doctors and patients.

Charles III, 75, suspended his public engagements in February when he was diagnosed with cancer following treatment for an enlarged prostate the previous month.

What form of cancer the king has is not announced.

His 42-year-old daughter-in-law, Princess Catherine of Wales, underwent complex abdominal surgery in January and announced in March that she had also been diagnosed with cancer and was undergoing chemotherapy. The form of her cancer is also not disclosed.

Tuesday’s event, the first in a series of public appearances planned for the coming weeks, is to help raise awareness of the importance of early cancer diagnosis and the latest research.

The King is a patron of the independent cancer research organization Cancer Research UK (CRUK) and the charity Macmillan Cancer Support, while the Queen is president of another cancer charity, Maggie’s.

Charles III, who replaced his deceased mother Queen Elizabeth II on the throne in September 2022, was officially crowned on May 6 last year.

After the cancer diagnosis, the monarch attended church services, appeared at private events and performed official duties as head of state.

Buckingham Palace said on Friday that the royal doctors were “very encouraged” by the progress in the treatment, but it was too early to say how long the treatment would take. According to doctors, they are positive about the king’s chances of recovery.

Charles III’s outpatient treatment will continue, and the agenda will be shorter in the coming weeks and adjusted according to medical recommendations, the spokesman added.

Among the upcoming official events is a state visit by Japan’s Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako in June.

Attention is drawn

Members of the public last week welcomed the king’s return to some duties and praised his attention to cancer. CRUK states that cancer affects half of the population.

“It’s a huge problem in today’s society,” Keegan Gray, 23, a demolition manager from New Zealand, told AFP. “A lot of people have cancer and a lot of people hide it, they’re a little ashamed of it.”

So it is “really nice” that the king is trying to educate the public about cancer and the work of treatment clinics, K. Gray added.

Actress Annie Rae Donaghy, 21, said King’s illness will remind people that it doesn’t happen to anyone, regardless of their status.

Charles III and the wife of his son William, Prince of Wales, have suspended their participation in public events due to a cancer diagnosis. William has also stepped back from royal duties to support his wife and the couple’s three young children.

This resulted in more work for the remaining senior members of the royal family.

Camilla, 76, has taken over many of the king’s responsibilities, with the king’s sister Princess Anne and younger brother Prince Edward taking on a more prominent role.

Prince Harry, Charles III’s youngest son, is no longer a working member of the royal family but is expected to be in London on May 8 to mark the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games, the veterans’ games he founded.

He will later join his American wife Meghan during a visit to Nigeria.
