“The Economist” spoke with several residents of the Ukrainian city of Odessa. Oleksandr, a bartender, says that he doesn’t want to leave his house and is afraid that soldiers might knock on his door.

“You can leave, but it’s a one-way ticket. You can go to the front line, but it can also be a one-way ticket. Or you can stay here and live in fear,” Oleksandr said.

24-year-old Vladislav felt like a true patriot at the beginning of the war. During the first months of the war, he watched reports of Russian atrocities and felt a strong desire to fight. Then the men in his entourage began to leave for the east, to the front line. His friends, relatives, father and stepfather all became soldiers.

The terrible news about the reality of a war with a shortage of ammunition began to reach Vladislav. Many of his friends died. Now Vladislav’s family is urging him to stay away from the mobilization officers who are roaming the streets of Odessa. He listens to their advice and goes into hiding.

“I’m not afraid because I’m afraid to fight, I’m afraid because I know what’s going on there,” the man admitted.
