Google has agreed to delete billions of records containing the personal information of more than 136 million US citizens who used the Chrome browser to search. The decision is part of a settlement of a lawsuit filed by plaintiffs accusing the company of illegally tracking users, the Associated Press reported.

In addition to removing billions of personal records, Google will also provide users with more information about how much of their confidential data is visible using Chrome Incognito and implement other measures to limit the collection of personal information.

Details of the settlement came to light more than three months after Google and its lawyers said they had reached an agreement over Chrome’s privacy controls. In the lawsuit, the company was accused of monitoring the actions of Internet users even after they turned on the “Incognito” mode in their browser, which, in theory, should have made them anonymous on the network.

Google tried to have the lawsuit dismissed, but the court set a trial date. The parties later negotiated the terms of the settlement. Its details became known on April 1, but it has yet to be approved by U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers. during a July 30 hearing in Oakland federal court.

A class-action lawsuit against Google was filed in June 2020. The plaintiffs demanded $5 billion from the company for failing to ensure their anonymity in Incognito mode.

Another lawsuit against Google was filed about a month later by Boies Schiller Flexner. It said that even after turning off tracking in settings, Google continued to collect data about app usage and personal information, using a mechanism called Firebase that the company hands over to app developers.
