Russia on Tuesday reported drone attacks on factories in Tatarstan, more than 1,100 km from Ukraine, and said people were injured in the strikes.

More than two years after the Russian invasion, drone production is becoming increasingly important for Ukraine, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Combat drones in particular have shown “excellent results in destroying Russia’s military potential in the rear,” he said in his traditional address. “Our defense industry must produce exactly what is needed for war,” said the president. “It is clear that drones will be one of the decisive factors in achieving victory in this war.”

Ukraine’s military has been increasingly targeting Russian oil refineries far behind the front with drones in recent weeks. According to Kiev, these are legitimate targets from a military point of view, as it allows them to stop the supply of fuel to the Russian military. It also wants to cut revenues from fuel flows that help fund Russia’s military industry.

As Ukraine successfully attacks Russian military facilities, Moscow is forced to resort to cloaking and deception techniques to hide its planes, with silhouettes of alleged fighter jets painted on airfields.

According to an analysis carried out by the US-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Russia is preparing a large-scale offensive in Ukraine, but can carry out the planned major offensive in only one operational direction – in the west of the Donetsk region.
