State media: Xi Jinping tells Biden Taiwan issue is ‘red line’ that must not be crossed

Chinese President Xi Jinping told counterpart Joe Biden in a phone call that the Taiwan issue is a “red line that must not be crossed,” state media reported.

“Xi Jinping stressed that the Taiwan issue is the first uncrossable red line in China-US relations,” the state-run Xinhua news agency said in a statement, adding: “We will not allow uncontrolled separatist activities and external conspiracies to support the ‘Taiwan independence’ forces.”

For his part, US President Joe Biden on Tuesday called on Xi Jinping to keep calm in Taiwan as the self-ruled democratic island prepares to inaugurate a new leader. Beijing considers Taiwan its territory and threatens to take it back, if necessary by force.

Mr. Biden “stressed the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and the rule of law and freedom of navigation in the South China Sea,” the White House said in a statement.
