Disturbing posts

The man from Kaunas, who committed suicide during the live broadcast, wrote various messages related to the death on his Facebook account in recent days. “I’m cutting myself”, “I’ve got a few minutes left to live”, “Come on, I’m in heaven”.

All these were a kind of cries for help, with which the guy probably wanted to draw attention to his psychological state and overflowing emotions.

Unfortunately, such recent short posts of his have been accompanied by smileys and emoticons that show that the other person is funny.

Others, after the fact of death, began to express their condolences to their relatives. “Too bad there was no one around to stop it.”

There are many such comments about help not being provided on time. However, is it possible to help a person who is thinking about suicide and what are the signs that indicate that a person is planning to commit suicide?

A person’s mood has changed

Psychologist Andrius Losakevičius, a volunteer at the “Crisis Overcoming Center”, told the news portal tv3.lt about this.

We ask a psychologist, is it possible to notice that a young person is thinking about suicide?

“We cannot know exactly what a man is thinking until he speaks about it himself. Therefore, it is extremely important to create and maintain such a relationship with others so that they are not afraid to speak up, share their experiences and ask for help.

Suicidal thoughts can be signaled by a change in the person’s mood (may seem sad, withdrawn, despairing).

Changes in mood can be reflected in behavior: being apathetic to everything, no longer interested in activities you used to enjoy, taking risks as if your life is no longer important to him. Or the other way around – someone who was sad and apathetic before suddenly became strangely enthusiastic.

If you have a feeling that something out of the ordinary is happening to a person, it is worth looking into what is happening in this person’s life, what has led to these changes.

A person who often thinks about suicide directly or indirectly mentions his thoughts, for example – he can talk about the meaninglessness of life, that he can no longer live like this, he wants everything to end.

Sometimes a person can directly say that they are thinking about suicide. Such statements can frighten or even anger – but it is important to understand that this is a cry for help, the young person may not know how to express his despair in any other way. Therefore, it is always necessary to respond seriously and with care.

As mentioned, there are no direct signs without a clear statement about suicide, but it is important to react if we notice alarming changes in mood or behavior.”

Difficulties can be overcome

According to the psychologist, it is extremely important to communicate with the person next to you and share your observations, ask what certain changes in behavior mean, even invite them to talk about it:

“It is necessary to understand that a person who thinks about suicide is often tormented by very contradictory feelings, often experiences despair, confusion and begins to consider suicide as the only way to stop feeling this way.

However, at the same time, a person also has a desire to live – he does not want to die, deep down he often hopes to receive help, but he is not always able to ask for that help, he is hesitant. That is why it is so important to be the kind of adult that young people are not afraid to open up to in difficult moments.

We repeat an important message to everyone: suicide is often associated with psychological difficulties, and these can be overcome.

Therefore, it is really important to seek help if you, your child or a loved one feel depressed or confused.”

There is a mobile team

Suicide affects both family members, the community, and an educational institution – how should the surrounding people be treated after such a tragedy?

“Communities and families are provided with psychological assistance after such painful crisis events by Mobile Psychological Crisis Overcoming Teams (Crisis Overcoming Teams, www.kriziukomanda.lt).

The psychologists of these teams can help the school administration, teachers, parents of children – both by helping to control the crisis situation and psychologically overcoming the incident.

This help is free of charge, so I would definitely recommend applying if a similar event happens (death, missing person, assault, etc.).

You can always call the call center number of these teams at 1815 and consult for help, psychologists are on duty on weekdays from 9 am to 7 pm, on Saturdays from 9 am to 3 pm.

Psychologists advise how to inform the school community and parents about the situation, help to find out who was most affected by the crisis event, who needs more help.

Anxiety and tension really arise after similar disasters. It is important to talk about the event with everyone who wants to talk about it. Unresolved psychological difficulties can worsen, become chronic and have serious consequences, such as depression.”

It is necessary to listen and hear

Psychological help and mutual support are extremely important in order to overcome a psychological crisis.

According to the psychologist, it is important to ensure a safe atmosphere after the tragedy – to let him talk, to listen carefully, to say that all his reactions are normal, to pay more attention to the child during this period, being together.

No need to try to come up with advice, just sympathize that you too are very sorry and hurt that this happened. If parents need help, advice on how to talk, help children with psychological difficulties, you can always call the Parents’ Line on 8 800 900 12.

“Both teenagers and adults can be tempted to use alcohol or psychotropic substances to suppress strong feelings when they are under a lot of stress, but it is very important to understand that this only aggravates the problems, not solves them.

It is better to overcome stress with other, psychologically useful activities, such as drawing or writing, sports, trying to spend more time with people who are good to be with.

It is very important to consciously take care of yourself – get enough sleep, eat healthy, avoid stimulants, move more, be in the fresh air.

If you feel like you’ve lost your sense of control, you can try to regain it little by little by making as many small decisions as you can, like deciding what you want to eat, even though it doesn’t seem to matter at all. A clear agenda also helps with this – to plan the day’s activities and stick to this plan.”

Invites to apply for help

A person who has experienced a crisis event is often bothered by intrusive thoughts, recurring dreams, nightmares, but this is normal, you need to understand that all this will weaken with time. And although it seems to a person that a certain event is too difficult to endure, it is possible to survive it.

“If it’s difficult, ask for help, if you see someone else suffering, offer help non-obtrusively, with care.

Pupils and young people can always turn to the volunteers on duty at the “Youth line” or “Children’s line” for help, and adults – to the “Crisis Overcoming Center”.

He broke the door of the apartment

According to news portal tv3.lt, the officers managed to enter the apartment only after breaking down the door. However, it was no longer possible to help the man. The man’s body was found with stab wounds.

It is added that the police responded to the incident after receiving a report from an international law enforcement agency.

People watching the live broadcast did not report the incident to the authorities.
